Fabric Look Drapes & Bows

FOR THE DRAPES:
1. Mix equal parts of fondant and gumpaste to make the drapes. (eg 150g fondant to 150g gumpaste). Mix well and allow to rest for approximately 45 minutes to regain its elasticity. Example 1

2. Roll out the paste on a board lightly dusted with cornstarch, with a non stick rolling pin. Pick up the paste occasionally to make sure that the paste is not stuck to the board. Using a small amount of pressure, place the ground rolling pin at the top and gently press downwards. To make light impressions on to the fondant. Continue this motion until you complete the whole piece of fondant.
3. Cut a template out of cardboard to the size of 8 inch length X 5 inch width and pleat one edge from base to top. Do the same on the opposite side. Example 2

4. Using a medium brush, add some "gum glue" to the cake at both ends of attachment, do not add too much or the drape will slide off. Gumglue Recipe: Mix 1 tsp gum arabic with 3 tsp water. Let set for 10 minutes.

5. Gently pick up the drape and attach one point, thus creating the natural fold in the drape and allow the drape to droop at least 3/4 of the way to the bottom and then attach to the other point.

FOR THE BOWS:
1. Follow the same instructions as for the drapes, this time cut templates of approximately 11/2 inch width x 3 inch length.

2. PLEAT BOTH ENDS. Place some tissue in the center and fold over stick ends together with a little "gum glue".

Example 3

3. Make both pieces in the fashion and attach the centres once again using "gum glue".

4. Cut out a strip of approximately 11/2 inch in width and fold into 1/3, one overlapping the other. Place the strip over the center of the bow loops and attach with a little "gum glue". Turn the bow over and attach the center of the bow. Make sure the loops are snug in Example 4
place. Trim off the excess paste and neaten the paste at the back. Flip the bow over and allow to dry.

5. For the tails: roll out the paste once again and cut 2 pieces using the same template according to the size of the cake. Cut out a "V" shape at the base and pleat the top. Attach the tails when wet and pipe a small amount of royal icing to attach the bow. When all the drapes and bows are dry, brush on some pearl dust to give them that satin look.
